In 1653 he wrote “The Complete Angler” – the classic treatise on the virtues of serene fishing over the violence of hunting. In 1922, a group inspired by his writing formed the Izaak Walton League of America which was dedicated to the preservation of clean water and natural resources. One of its members, A.F.Knotts, came to the area known today as Yankeetown to fish and hunt and in 1924 the Izaak Walton Lodge was built. It remained open during the Great Depression as a health retreat and more recently as a private residence. On July 22, 1999, a fire burned down the historic old lodge, however in 2000 a replica structure was built.
